Catherine Falls & Kotagiri Streams

Moderate · 2 days · ₹5,800 per person · from Coimbatore

A gentle high start, then a shola-and-tea descent to one of the Nilgiris' highest waterfalls and its pools.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Aravenu village homestay → Catherine Falls → Falls base & Geddehalla stream pools

Route highlights

  • St. Catherine Falls (~250 ft): A two-tier plunge fed by the Geddehalla stream — from the top viewpoint the water drops into a green amphitheatre of shola.
  • Geddehalla stream pools: The descent reaches quiet pools and rock slabs at the base — a cold, clear place for a mid-trek pause.
  • Kallar river: The trail ends by the Kallar tumbling off the plateau toward the plains — the eastern-Nilgiri water gateway.

Hidden gem: Geddehalla stream pools below Catherine Falls — Most visitors see the 76 m fall from the Dolphin's Nose railing; the tea-estate path to its base and the stream pools on the Geddehalla are walked by estate workers and almost no one else.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.

Longwood Shola & Rangaswamy Peak

Easy · 2 days · ₹5,800 per person · from Coimbatore

The gentlest introduction to the Blue Mountains — Badaga villages, a rare native shola, and gorge-edge views.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Kattabettu → Longwood Shola loop → Kodanad viewpoint → Rangaswamy Peak & pillar

Route highlights

  • Longwood Shola: A rare intact native forest — mossy, bird-loud, and the Nilgiris' natural 'water tower' explained on the walk.
  • Badaga village & tea: Hatti architecture, a working tea estate and factory, and Badaga hospitality over hot cups.
  • Kodanad viewpoint: The plateau falls away into the vast Moyar gorge — the wildlife corridor linking two mountain ranges, plains shimmering far below.

Hidden gem: Rangaswamy Peak & pillar (1,785 m) — A Badaga sacred hill beyond Kodanad with a natural rock pillar, visited once a year by the villages and otherwise reached only by a 6 km forest-edge walk.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.

Avalanche–Upper Bhavani Fringe

Moderate · 3 days · ₹8,500 per person · from Coimbatore

Classic Nilgiri high country — rolling shola-grassland, trout streams and the fringe of Mukurthi's tahr habitat.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Avalanche → Avalanche lake & shola → Upper Bhavani fringe → Emerald / Silent Valley view

Route highlights

  • Avalanche shola: Dense, dripping native forest beside a jade lake — one of the richest bird habitats in the Nilgiris.
  • Trout streams & rhododendron: Cold clear brooks and, in season, hillsides of rhododendron in bloom across the downs.
  • Upper Bhavani fringe: Open high grassland on the edge of Mukurthi — Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri pipit and laughingthrushes; immense, empty views.

Hidden gem: Upper Bhavani fringe & Avalanche lake — A restricted catchment inside the Nilgiri Biosphere where entry is by Forest Department permit only.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.

Mudumalai Buffer & Corridors

Easy · 3 days · ₹8,500 per person · from Coimbatore

Where the Nilgiris meet the plains — elephant corridors, a tiger-reserve buffer and living tribal cultures.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Bokkapuram hamlet → Buffer forest walk → Moyar gorge rim at dawn → Safari & corridor walk → Irula / Kurumba hamlet visit

Route highlights

  • Elephant-country craft: The single most useful skill for South India's hills — how to read and behave around wild elephants, taught by local guides.
  • Moyar gorge: A vast canyon and the wildlife corridor between two mountain ranges — raptors overhead, plains far below.
  • Jeep safari: Mudumalai's teak forest holds elephant herds, gaur, dhole, deer and a strong tiger population.

Hidden gem: Moyar gorge rim at dawn — The 'Mysore ditch' — a 300 m gorge where the Moyar river separates the Nilgiris from the Mysore plateau.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.

Mukurthi Fringe Traverse

Moderate · 3 days · ₹8,500 per person · from Coimbatore

The highest walkable Nilgiri downs on the park's permitted edge — big-sky grassland and tahr country.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Parson's Valley edge → Porthimund fringe → High downs traverse → Base → Pykara falls & lake

Route highlights

  • Parson's Valley reservoir: Still water ringed by shola at the edge of the protected zone — a serene, seldom-seen start.
  • The high downs (2,600 m): The highest grassland walk in the Nilgiris — wind, cloud-shadow and horizon-to-horizon emptiness.
  • Nilgiri tahr country: Quiet approaches give real chances of the endemic mountain ungulate on the crags.

Hidden gem: The high downs above Porthimund (2,600 m) — Mukurthi's fringe grasslands west of Parsons Valley, where the Nilgiri tahr grazes and the Western Catchment keeps visitors to permit-holders.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.

Sispara & Bangitappal Streams

Moderate–Difficult · 3 days · ₹8,700 per person · from Coimbatore

A permit-only traverse of shola-grassland laced with mountain streams to the great drop at Sispara.

Waypoints: Coimbatore → Upper Bhavani gate → Bangitappal → Sispara edge

Route highlights

  • Bangitappal streams: Cold, clear brooks braid the grassland around the camp — you fall asleep to running water and wake to mist on the pools.
  • Highland tarns: Small, still lakes hidden in folds of the downs mirror the sky — seldom seen, utterly quiet.
  • The Sispara drop: At the edge the plateau plunges to the Kunthi river in Silent Valley — a wall of water-carved forest thousands of feet below.

Hidden gem: Bangitappal tarns — High-altitude pools on the Bangitappal stream inside the Western Catchment, reached only on a Forest Department permit.

Skills you'll learn: Elephant and gaur country, navigating the downs in mist, stream-health testing and visiting hill communities as a good guest — Level 1.
